Using data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, our team is analyzing the frequency, distribution and scope of health worker protests globally prior to and during the pandemic.
protests by medical students & resident doctors in 2020-2022
—
Medical students and residents play a crucial role in health service delivery. Yet, these trainees experience a high level of vulnerability within the health system and frequently lack the protections and power of fully credentialed health professionals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, health worker trainees around the world had their training pathways interrupted, were called upon to fill roles normally reserved for credentialed workers, and were generally expected to help smooth volatility during this time of crisis. In this project, we are taking a closer look at protests organized by medical students and residents, with a particular focus on India, Pakistan, Mexico, France and Spain.
